Our dance workshops feature diverse styles such as hip hop, breakdancing, modern dance, ballet, tap dance plus more, and for the first time this fall, we’re offering a special art workshop on eco-printing! All workshops are eight weeks except Intro to Tap and Eco-Printing. No dance or art experience is needed!

BegINNING Hip Hop WorkshopS

Our popular Beginning Hip Hop workshop is back for the fall and spring! In eight weeks, learn stylized, rhythmic and coordinated hip hop moves and then put them together in a combination to a current hip hop hit. A consistent weekly warmup with upbeat music helps students isolate and strengthen different muscle groups. Relieve stress and condition the body while aerobically dancing in a safe and supportive environment!

Kathryn Auman is Arts Together's Director of Dance Programs. She teaches a variety of dance/movement classes, including modern dance and hip hop, and is also Director of Rainbow Dance Co., Arts Together's signature modern dance performance program that is the only multi-age dance company of its kind in North Carolina with members ages 10 to 60+. Kathryn holds a BFA in Dance from Virginia Commonwealth University and also performs with Black Box Dance Theatre throughout North Carolina.

Moving with Parent & Tot WorkshopS

Parents and tots move, stretch and bond together in this creative movement workshop designed to introduce our youngest movers to basic dance skills. A playful and nurturing environment fosters connection!

Toddler must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or guardian. This workshop is limited to 8 toddler/parent pairs.

Breakdancing 101 Workshops

TUESDAYS • 6:30-7:30 PM OR 7:30-8:30 PM
FALL • OCT 1 - NOV 19

Back by popular demand, Breakdancing 101 teaches the basics of breakdancing such as toprock, footwork, freezes and power moves, as well as its history in hip hop culture! Students learn cool moves to show off wherever they go in this multi-generational workshop led by the notorious Raleigh Rockers Crew. Please note that Breakdancing 101 is offered at two different times: 6:30-7:30 PM or 7:30-8:30 PM. Please choose one when signing up for this workshop.

Breakdancing 101 is for children, teens and adults! Parents, if you've wanted a shared experience with your child or teen, this multi-generational workshop is a fantastic opportunity for that. No dance experience required!


INSTRUCTOR: Raleigh Rockers Crew
The Raleigh Rockers Crew was originally founded in 2006 as a breakdancing club at NC State University. The club hosted open practices to the Raleigh community and became a place for people to learn and grow as dancers. By 2010, they began to "battle," and now the club travels to compete, teach workshops and perform community engagement. They're often seen breakdancing at free, local festivals such as SPARKcon, the African American Cultural Festival and La Fiesta del Pueblo!

Beginner/Intermediate Modern Workshops

WEDNESDAYS • 7:00-8:00 PM
FALL • OCT 2 - NOV 20

Perfect for new dancers or individuals with prior dance experience that have been out of practice, this beginning/intermediate modern dance workshop teaches fundamental modern dance skills and vocabulary. Focusing on alignment and balance while gaining fluency in sequencing, students safely execute technique through exercises and combinations across the floor. Different movement qualities and tones are also explored through improvisation and composition.

INSTRUCTOR: Betsy Ward-Hutchinson
Betsy Ward-Hutchinson has taught modern dance at Arts Together for more than 20 years. She holds three dance degrees — BA in Dance, Meredith College; BS in Dance Education, UNC-Charlotte; MA in Dance Education, UNC-Greensboro — and has been instrumental in developing dance education curriculum for Enloe High School in Raleigh and Cary Academy.

ECO-Printing FALL Workshop

THURSDAYS • OCT 3, 6:00-8:00 PM
& OCT 10, 6:00-7:00 PM

Design a silk scarf using eco-printing, an all-natural process that permanently transfers plant and leaf images onto fabric! All color and pattern comes from the natural plant material; no paints or dyes are used. The cloth and leaves are bundled together, tightly bound, then steamed to produce the beautifully printed product. Held outdoors under the pavilion next to Arts Together’s lawn, this special two-part art workshop celebrates the start of fall.

INSTRUCTOR: Renée Boyette
Renée Boyette holds a BFA in Art Education with a concentration in painting from East Carolina University. As Arts Together’s Director of Art Programs, she develops and implements the visual arts curriculum for students ranging from preschool to elementary school age, but is also skilled in leading adults in creative projects. Renée has organized and led many interactive visual art projects at events throughout the Raleigh community, including the Hillsborough Wide Open Celebration, NC Sports Day at the NC History Museum, family events at North Hills, Artsplosure, SPARKcon and others. She believes strongly in the transformative power of the arts.

In Beginning/Intermediate Ballet, students learn basic ballet positions, vocabulary and traditional sequence of exercises — moving from the barre to the center, then across the floor. This eight week, mixed-level workshop allows new dancers to challenge themselves and those with prior ballet experience to strengthen their fundamental technical principles in a safe and encouraging environment! Physical alignment, balance, strength, flexibility and control within a tension-free body is emphasized. Ballet shoes optional.

INSTRUCTOR: Steven James Rodriquez Velez
Hailing from Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, Steven James Rodriguez Velez began his movement studies with the martial arts. He went on to study ballet, jazz and contemporary dance intensively at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus. Steven performed and choreographed with Hincapié and Andanza dance companies before moving to the Triangle area in 2015. A sought-after instructor, he teaches dance classes at several local studios in addition to Arts Together. Steven also performs with many area dance companies, including Black Irish, Black Box Dance Theatre, OM grown dancers and ShaLeigh Dance Works.

For four weeks, students explore the basics of tap dance technique and terminology with a side of tap dance history! Fundamental steps, concepts and skills are introduced and built upon each week. Tap shoes required.

Katie Padgett Brown headshot

INSTRUCTOR: Katie Padgett Brown
Katie Padgett Brown is a nationally renowned tap dancer, choreographer and instructor. She has taught at dance studios in Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky and North Carolina, and was invited to perform at the annual Kennedy Center Gala twice. Katie has also performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center in Broadway’s Greatest Showstoppers with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Marvin Hamlisch. Her students have gone on to dance with The Julliard School, Mark Morris Dance Group, Boston Ballet, various Broadway shows and numerous college dance programs.
