Beginning Hip Hop Spring Workshop

MONDAYS, FEB 4 – APR 1 • 6:45-7:45 PM (no class FEB 25)

Our popular Beginning Hip Hop Workshop is back for the spring! Students learn stylized, rhythmic and coordinated hip hop moves and then put them together in a combination to a current hip hop hit. A consistent weekly warmup with upbeat music helps participants isolate and strengthen different muscle groups. Relieve stress and condition the body while aerobically dancing in a safe and supportive environment!

INSTRUCTOR: Kathryn Auman
Kathryn Auman is Arts Together's Dance Director. She teaches a variety of dance/movement classes, including modern dance and hip hop, and is also Director of Rainbow Dance Company, Arts Together's multi-generational modern dance troupe. Kathryn holds a BFA in Dance from Virginia Commonwealth University and also performs with Black Box Dance Theatre throughout North Carolina.

Start your week off right while you move, stretch and bond with your tot! In this creative movement workshop designed to introduce our youngest students to basic dance skills, parent and child move together in a playful and nurturing environment.

Toddler must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent or guardian. This workshop is limited to 8 toddler/parent pairs.

Due to such incredible demand, we've added a SECOND Breakdancing 101 Spring Workshop from 7:30-8:30 PM on Tuesdays, FEB 5 - MAR 26 with the Raleigh Rockers Crew! Breakdancing 101 from 6:30-7:30 PM has ONE SPOT LEFT! If you want that time slot, don't delay in signing up!

In Breakdancing 101, students study the basics of breakdancing, such as toprock, footwork, freezes and power moves, as well as its history in hip hop culture. You'll learn cool moves to show off anywhere you go!

Breakdancing 101 is for children, teens and adults! Parents, if you've wanted a shared experience with your child or teen, this multi-generational workshop is a fantastic opportunity for that. No dance experience required!

INSTRUCTOR: Raleigh Rockers Crew
The Raleigh Rockers Crew was originally founded in 2006 as a breakdancing club at NC State University. The club hosted open practices to the Raleigh community and became a place for people to learn and grow as dancers. By 2010, they began to "battle," and now the club travels to compete, teach workshops and perform community outreach. They're often seen breakdancing at free, local festivals such as SPARKcon, the African American Cultural Festival and La Fiesta del Pueblo!

Beginning/Intermediate Modern Spring Workshop

WEDNESDAYS, FEB 6 – MAR 27 • 6:45-7:45 PM

Perfect for new dancers or individuals with prior dance experience that have been out of practice, this beginning/intermediate modern dance workshop teaches fundamental modern dance skills and vocabulary. Focusing on alignment and balance while gaining fluency in sequencing, students safely execute technique through exercises and combinations across the floor. Different movement qualities and tones are also explored through improvisation and composition.

Betsy Ward-Hutchinson has taught modern dance at Arts Together for more than 20 years. She holds three dance degrees - BA in Dance, Meredith College; BS in Dance Education, UNC-Charlotte; MA in Dance Education, UNC-Greensboro - and has been instrumental in developing dance education curriculum for Enloe High School in Raleigh and Cary Academy.

World Dance Spring Workshop

Dance is a portal to a culture and its people. This multicultural workshop takes students on a geographical and historical journey of dance, through cultures and landscapes as near as New York City's Bronx and as far as Mumbai. Each week, we honor and study a dance from another culture like Brazilian Samba, Indian Bhangra, Middle Eastern Belly Dance, Reggaeton, Soca/Afrobeat and more! Prepare to wine your waist, move and groove, and shimmy and shake to rhythms from around the world.

Tailored specifically for teens and adults. Suitable for all levels — no dance experience required!

The drop-in price for this workshop is $20. If you decide to sign up for the rest of the series, that $20 will be applied to the total cost of the workshop.

INSTRUCTOR: Diandra Jones
Diandra Jones is a world-ranked competitive-turned-professional Irish Step Dancer who toured North America and Europe for five years with Trinity Irish Dance Company, before studying and teaching multicultural dance forms. She has guest taught at universities and performing arts institutes throughout the US as well as in Dominica, Barbados, Argentina, Ghana, and the US and British Virgin Islands, where she most recently worked as a choreographer, dance scholar, performer and teacher.
