2008 SUMMERQUEST PROGRAMS

Every summer Arts Together offers programs for rising first through sixth graders at Our Lady of Lourdes School. Located near North Hills Shopping Center and the Inner Beltline, Our Lady of Lourdes is a convenient location for many families who are looking for special arts and educational enrichment programs for their children. Taught by full-time teachers (many from the Wake County Public School System), students explore the world around them and/or the creativity inside them after designing their own programs from the smorgasbord of science, art, adventure, drama, dance and music options available. Now in its 17th year, SummerQuest is proof that learning and summer fun are a perfect match!
SummerQuest Juniors: rising 1st – 3rd graders
SummerQuest Seniors: rising 4th – 6th graders

Dates: June 16– August 1
Morning Sessions: 8:30am – 12:30pm
Afternoon Sessions: 1-5pm
Tuition:      Half-Day: $115
               Full-Day:  $230
               Musical Theater Camp: $210 (2-week session)


Snacks & Lunch
Students should bring daily snacks for each session in which they are enrolled. Students attending SummerQuest for a full day should pack a lunch in addition to bringing two snacks for our morning and afternoon breaks.


Early Morning Arrival/Late Afternoon Departure
For an additional fee, students enrolled in morning sessions may be dropped off as early as 7:30am and students enrolled in afternoon sessions may be picked up as late as 6pm.

MORNINGS:

Jurassic Art

Go back in time, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Explore volcanoes, fossils and all kinds of different dinosaurs through Jurassic Art. We’ll create papier-mache dinosaur eggs and pasta fossils. We’ll make magicical, model dinosaurs. We’ll even turn ourselves into dinosaurs – feet, claws and all!!

OR

Sew Cool
Discover fabric’s creative side as you explore its artistic identity. Create everything from fabulous puppets to fantastical creatures as you learn basic sewing techniques and stitches. Then finish off your art projects with buttons, beads, sequins and trim. A handy lifetime skill, come add sewing to your artistic repertoire!

How Does Your Garden Grow? I

There are so many kinds of gardens you can create and people garden in different ways all over the world. Make terrariums, rock gardens, moss gardens and Zen gardens, while learning about plant varieties, design styles, growing conditions and more. This camp will make the horticultural artist in you bloom!

Busy Bodies
Learn about keeping your body happy and healthy in this active indoor and outdoor camp. Stretches, relay races, gymnastics and games will be paired with learning how to make healthy snacks and stay fit. Don’t just sit there – let’s get busy!

Buggy for Art

Enter the world of BUGS and ART! Meet caterpillars, ladybugs, walking sticks, butterflies, oh my! Cutting, pasting, drawing, painting, etching, sculpting, oh let’s try! We’ll even do a little bug catching (and releasing!) outdoors, by and by. Science and art make for a “buggy” good time, so come join us and FLY!

Me, Myself and I
This award-winning art class uses art to build self-esteem, explore values and the ways we relate to others, while having lots of fun! We’ll use a variety of art materials and unusual objects to create self-boxes, stuffed forms and other very cool projects that let you show off who you are and who you dream of becoming.

Daffy About Drama

This fun and engaging class will introduce students to creative drama through pantomime, character work, storytelling and improvisation. Treasure Hunters Jr.
There’s a national treasure just waiting to be unearthed! Only a fearless team of treasure hunters, willing to decode historical clues and follow cryptic leads around the country, if not around the globe, can uncover this long hidden American secret. Are you ingenious, inventive and a super sleuth? If so, then come help us track down a national treasure and save the day!

Shake, Rattle and Roll

Do you ever find yourself full of energy, but you’re not entirely sure what to do with it? Why not join us, as we explore the basic elements of movement! We’ll play lots of movement games, develop our creative skills, and make each action-packed day unique… and fun!

Set the Stage
Learn about simple stage design as you create the scenery for the Drama Kings and Queens production by creating set pieces and building props! Whether you’re an actor, a painter, a sculptor or an architect, watch your talents grow as you learn what kind of team it takes to turn theatre magic into reality!

Drama Kings and Queens
Do you like pretending to be someone else? Here’s a chance to use your energy and talents to bring storybook characters to life, create faraway places and have imaginary adventures! Learn acting, music and vocal techniques to express yourself on stage and captivate an audience. Then “show” what you’ve learned to family and friends!

Wood Wonders
Let’s get creative with wood! In this introduction to woodworking, we’ll practice using basic tools and techniques to construct a variety of projects. Have fun while constructing birdhouses, treasure boxes, pie frames and much, much more. The perfect camp for little builders and designers.

Kitchen Chemistry I-SORRY, FULL!

Learn all about the chemistry and physical science surrounding us everyday. Make ice cream without a freezer, create flubber and goop, and make an egg bounce! Observe chemical reactions and physical changes right before your eyes. Discover how many household items really belong in a scientist’s laboratory!

OR

Go Fish
Join us as we swim into the wonderful world of theatre. Opportunities abound to act, sing and create your own dances as you work on a musical to perform the last day of class. Go Fish tells the story of a group of fish who desperately want to fit in. On their journey, they meet clown fish and seahorses who try to help. Finally, it is the Great White Shark who reminds them to be themselves and shows them how many great friends they’ve made along the way.

Down to a Science

Have a blast as you learn new science concepts and use your curiosity to develop new skills! Explore the natural world with fun-filled outdoor adventures. Make rockets, find spider webs, erupt volcanoes, search for fossils, take daily walking field trips and more. This trek into the natural sciences will open up a whole new world!

What’s Your Story? II
We all have stories tumbling around our imaginations, but how do they get from our heads into real books? Here’s your chance to learn how by publishing one of your own. We’ll read some of our favorite books and look at how the illustrations bring the stories in them to life. Then we’ll write our own tales of adventure, fantasy and fun; create illustrations for them; and finally bind each one into a book for each student to take home!

Pour Your Heart Out
Time to throw those paintbrushes away as your POUR yourself a painting! This class offers young experimenters a great new way to create a painting with very little brushwork. Working in watercolor, layer by layer, you’ll see your painting evolve into a finished work, almost like a Polaroid photo that develops before your eyes! Try something new… just do it! Wear destructible clothes!

Mystery Madness
Do you love mysteries and whodunits? Become a super sleuth as you play all kinds of mystery games to test your crime-solving talents. Follow clues then use your new forensic skills to "wrap up a big case". Be part of Raleigh’s youngest detective agency!

Can you piece together a picture the same way you make a jigsaw puzzle? Learn how different artists piece together beautiful collages then create some of your own. Use photographs, homemade papers, magazine images, fabric and a wide array of other materials to turn your imagination into artwork!

MORNINGS:

Make a Print

Learn the basics of printmaking and all about the different things you can use to make prints! From the common potato to playdough, corks, playing cards and other quirky stuff, you’ll learn different printing and painting methods and have a great time too! Wear destructible clothing, please.

Fawning Over Flora
Summers are filled with green leaves, tall trees, plants and flowers galore. Let’s head outdoors to see how many we can find and explore the many different ways that they grow. We’ll hike, sketch, hunt, collect, splash and have a great time as we learn.

Adventures in Puppetry

Puppets are soooooooo dramatic! They can be happy, sad, mischievous and sometimes even very brave. Strap on your imagination as we create original skits using puppet actor friends. Along the way, we’ll explore many different styles of puppets and make some of our very own.

Attention Architects II
Want to have a “constructive” experience this summer? Learn about the design and construction of buildings, towers, bridges and boats. Then use that knowledge to build and test your own designs. Math, literature, science and art will serve to guide us in our projects. Ultimately, we will endeavor to create our very own recycled city and original printed cityscapes!

Out and About

What’s out there? Let’s find out! We’ll head outdoors to explore all the plants, animals, geology and water in the world around us this summer. We’ll hike, sketch, hunt, collect, splash and generally enjoy ourselves as we learn. We’ll even use binoculars, because you never know what you might see when you get out and about!

Behind the Masks

Ever wanted to see what was behind a mask? Learn the ins and outs of mask making and its history using various materials - clay, papier-mâché, found items and paper. From animals to aliens, create expressive, humorous and outrageous masks to wear, to scare or to hang up in your room.

MORNINGS:

Comic Improv & Characters

Sometimes actors make it up as they go along, creating comedic sketches and crazy characters that have their audiences laughing ‘til they cry. Find your own dramatic funny bone this summer as you develop comic improv skills through theatre games and other activities. In the process, you’ll explore acting by becoming all kinds of characters who find themselves in the oddest situations.

Brush It Off

Do you like to paint? Spend a week exploring different painting styles and media, including tempura, watercolor and acrylic paints. Learn to express your imagination and develop a style all your own as your create your own portraits, still lifes and other masterpieces.

WEEK: JULY 7-11
MORNINGS:

Bones, Rock and Tracks

What do you see when you look down on the ground? Can you follow a trail of tracks certain of what kind of animal you’ll find at the end? Have you read the stories that rocks tell when you open them up to see the fossils inside? Creatures great and small leave clues behind to tell us that they were here. We’ll study bones, tracks, fossils and other animal signs to solve mysteries about what lived here before us.

Express Yourself

All great actors and actresses must use three things to bring characters to life: their voices, their bodies and their imaginations. We will use all three as well as improvisation, masks, and scripted scenes to explore what fun it can be to become someone else. On Friday we will take the stage to express ourselves.

Cartooning Fun!

Bring your funny bone with you and learn to create cartoons in color and black and white. Gain confidence in your talents as you discover how to capture your unique sillies on paper! Tell your parents to clear off the fridge – by the end of this camp, they’ll have lots of funny stuff coming their way!

K’nex K’nextion

Are you a builder or want to be one? Well, come help construct an entire working amusement park using K’nex construction materials! Once you’ve mastered K’nex, move on to build your own creations and make new friends, while working with others to accomplish these major construction projects!

Musical Theatre Camp (2-week camp July 14-25)
Join us for a fun-filled 2-week adventure as we rehearse then perform the smash-hit British musical Honk! This modern-day version of the classic Hans Christian Anderson story “The Ugly Duckling” gives up-tempo barnyard life a whole new vibe. Simple sets and costumes will round out the show.

Wild About Animals

Have fun with animals and art! Come explore the animal kingdom as we make papier-mâché animals, clay animal pinch pots, oil pastel animal pattern drawings, animal styrofoam prints, animal ornaments and more. A great class for animal lovers who want to experiment with a wide variety of art mediums.

SummerQuest Survivors

Who will be the sole survivor? Compete in team and individual challenges that test your physical and mental strength. Immunity is up for grabs. Decide on team names and making flags as part of your assignment. Are you willing to run, jump, pull, climb, think, stratigize and eat gross stuff? Then maybe you will be crowned SummerQuest Survivor 2008!
