DANCE FOR PRESCHOOLERS

DancePlay (ages 3-5)
Using stories, colorful props and wonderful music, this introductory course puts little dancers into motion. Children will explore a wide range of movement styles, learn basic dance principles and discover how to express feelings and ideas through music. Limit 12 students.

BEGINNING DANCE WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS (age 18+)

It’s never too late to start dancing! Whether you have always wanted to take a dance class or it’s been years since you’ve been in the studio, these workshops are a fun and creative way to get moving in a safe, no-pressure environment. Instructors will focus on proper alignment, coordination, sequencing and dance vocabulary in these easy-paced classes. A great way to increase flexibility, stay fit, feel good and have fun! Choose from hip hop, modern and ballet – try one or try them all! Limit 14 students for these seven-week workshops.

A child's introduction to dance, this course is designed to help children move beautifully and comfortably by developing strength, skill and body awareness in a creative setting. To facilitate learning for this age, instructors may use books, poems, music and artwork. An excellent opportunity for the young dancer to work within a group to explore dance fundamentals. Creative Dance & Yoga (ages 7-10)
Here is a class that will have your child stretching like a cobra and leaping through the air! We will explore basic dance and yoga fundamentals in a playful and creative environment. Your child will benefit from both the centering and stretching qualities of yoga along with the action and control of dance - a great combination!

In Creative Modern Dance, students begin to learn body control and proper alignment through modern dance technique. Exercises are given at the barre, at center and moving across the floor to facilitate increased coordination and flexibility. Improvisation and composition are also used to encourage students’ personal creativity and expression. Classes become more complex as students progress in age and ability. Limit 12 students.

Modern Technique (ages 10-13)
Continuing with the elements taught in Creative Modern Dance, students work to build strength, flexibility and skill as they learn how to move their bodies in the safest, most efficient manner. To cultivate their understanding of the creative, expressive nature of dance alongside their technical skills, students will use improvisation to develop their own personal styles. (Students age 10 must have 2 years prior dance training or permission of the instructor to enroll.) Limit 12 students.

(age 17 – adults) Intermediate Modern Technique II was designed for adult students with a solid command of modern dance vocabulary and at least three years prior training. Here dancers focus less on learning steps and more on using their creative abilities to gain fluency in the language of motion. Dance technique is refined as students use improvisation and composition to “experiment” with elements learned in previous classes. Limit 14 students.

Intermediate/Advanced Technique was designed for students with a solid command of modern dance vocabulary and at least four years prior training. Technique is refined as students master increasingly difficult dance combinations and exercises. Using a collaborative structure, greater emphasis is placed on composition and improvisation to increase students’ creative abilities. Limit 16 students.

The perfect class for the future, current or former dance major or professional dancer. At least five years prior training required. Limit 16 students.

Compositional Improvisation Workshops (age 18+)
These monthly workshops were developed to give dancers regular opportunities to hone their creative skills in making dance. In a supportive atmosphere, students, as soloists and eventually as an ensemble, will focus on the intentional and compositional shaping of spontaneous material, giving attention to the aesthetic and poetic consequences of their choices. The artistic value and integrity of one's "voice" is sharpened in conversation with the whole and a dialogue emerges as individual aesthetics meet, interact and expand. Limit 14 students.

Pre-Ballet I & II (ages 5-8)
A joyful introduction to ballet for younger dancers. Class will include basic vocabulary, a ballet barre and instructional games that will have your dancer twirling and leaping in no time. Ballet shoes recommended. Limit 12 students per section. Both sections are scheduled for Thursdays, 4:30-5:15pm in separate dance studios.

Leave the stress of school behind and bring your friends to this funky, fresh dance class! Students will learn dance technique in this beginning to intermediate level class. Revel in the stylized movements and rhythms of hip hop jazz, while building strength, coordination and flexibility. Limit 12 students.
